Over 90 years ago, the family business was founded by Heinrich Kalkhoff in Cloppenburg. To this day, the companys headquarters are situated in the tranquil northern German city. At the time of the bicycle boom in the 50s Kalkhoff produced more than 5000 frames per day, with over 1200 employees. Due to the increased competition from abroad, the company was forced to declare bankruptcy in 1986. However, it was acquired in 1989 by Derby Cycle Works GmbH Corporation, to which it belongs still. Derby Cycle is Germany's largest bicycle manufacturer and the third largest manufacturer in Europe.
